Welcome to Orange Thumb
The community garden makeover scheme from Fiskars
We understand the importance of green spaces in bringing communities together. That’s why we launched Fiskars Orange Thumb – a community gardening scheme that has transformed hundreds of public spaces around the world.
Mission Statement
To create, develop and execute Community Garden Makeovers which stimulate the creative and self-expression aspects of gardening, while engaging neighbourhood members to develop, promote, collaborate and celebrate community gardening, neighbourhood beautification, and sustainable agriculture.
Our History
Founded in the US in 2003, Fiskars Orange Thumb provides local communities with the tools and materials they need to improve their public spaces. Inspired by the “guerrilla gardening” movement, we have helped schools, community centres, wildlife groups and senior citizen centres to make better use of their land.
How We Work
We invite members of the general public to nominate a local area for an Orange Thumb makeover. We then contact successful applicants to arrange delivery of Fiskars Garden tools, funding for materials plus a batch of iconic Orange Thumb T-shirts for you volunteers. It really is that simple!
The Benefits
Social Interaction
Gardening is a great way to bring people together – irrespective of age or background.
New Opportunities
A new landscape can open up new opportunities for education, recreation, exercise and therapy.
Local Pride
Give your community a public space they can be proud of and they’ll look after it for years to come.
The Gardening Bug
Youngsters/volunteers leave with a newfound passion for gardening – a passion that hopefully stays with them for life.
